At this point, most children reach a spoken vocabulary of approximately 1,000 words. During this last stage in the critical period from 0 to 3 years old, your child will start to form sentences using 4-5 words such as, “I want my food.”

Your child will also be able to correctly use pronouns and distinguish them from one another. Additionally, your toddler will start to use prepositions when speaking, such as in, at, for, etc. Your toddler will continue to ask questions that start with “why” because the bottomless well of his curiosity about the world will never be filled.

Your toddler is also starting to understand concepts of time besides “now.” This will allow him to talk about things in the past and future, using time expressions, such as “after” and “before.” As your child’s cognitive development progresses, your child’s imagination will expand. He can create stories and some children eve have imaginary friends.

Milestones: 34-36 Months

  • Your child is able to form sentences of 4 to 5 words.
  • Your child is able to correctly use pronouns. (e.g. I, my , me, he, him, she, her, etc.)
  • Your child begins to use prepositions. (e.g. in, on, at, of, to, for, etc.)
  • Your child understands concepts of time. (e.g. after, before, soon, later, etc.)
